I’ve had Dustin Tokarski’s number for a while. His first season with the Chiefs he didn’t get many starts, but that didn’t stop me from rocking a Tokarski Saves shirt a friend had made. This shirt would prove to be very true over time. Tick started as the wee little back up for the Chiefs and exploded into their powerhouse starting goalie with rising saves percentage and shrinking goals against average. He got better every season. He’s racked up quite the hardware in his young career including a gold medal with Team Canada and a Memorial Cup. In addition to numerous most valuable player nods. But I just smile and think, “I told you he was fly.” The thing is, people still criticize Toka over his height. He’s 5’11 and for most that is a hair too short to be a netminder. But all I can say is, “haters to the left.”
In his final season with Spokane he posted a sexy 1.97 GAA and a .937 saves as well as 7 shutouts, while facing the most shots in the WHL and for some reason did not snag goaltender of the year. That hardware went to Chet Pickard, a goalie whom Toka has been squaring off against for quite sometime. Tokarski thrives in clutch games and overtime. During the Chiefs playoff runs, there were many occasions games when into double and triple overtime. Ain’t no thang for Mr Tokarski as he often was the goalie who did endure. I can’t find the exact stat, but he did have a streak during playoffs where he allowed zero goals in something like 137 minutes of play.
The save that put his name in everyone’s mouth:
Why you should love Tokarski:
Amazing hair. That’s why it’s so big. It’s full of secrets.
Says “you know” enough to make it a drinking game.
Polish last name.
Comes from a family of goalies.
Like any netminder, he is twitchy and super OCD.
Loves muscle cars.
Once joked he wanted to see the Spice Girls in concert.
Doesn’t keep a water bottle on the back of the net because he doesn’t want to give opponents a reference point or target to shoot for.
He is feisty. There are a few occasions where he has fought and shit talked other goalies. Doing such things as popping his jersey and pointing at the scoreboard.
Looks adorable surrounded by teddy bears.
When approaching or encountering the Tokarski, I highly advise not underestimating him. He is rather fierce and lethal. Tokarski was picked up in the 5th round of the 2008 NHL Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning. He may have went late, but I think he will prove what a steal he was to those who were knocking on his height.
